New Year, New Job Negotiation

With a new year right around the corner, people often create New Year’s Resolutions. One such resolution might be to find a different job/employer. Finding a new job will involve negotiating salary, benefits and possible “flex time.” In order to bolster your negotiating strategy, make sure you are aware of important aspects of your potential new job. These important factors are usually gathered toward the end of your job interview, when the employer ultimately asks, “do you have any questions for me/us?” This is your opportunity to find out how soon you can expect advancement, a higher pay scale and the overall work environment. Some suggestions for gathering this information might be: Who was the most recent person to be promoted? How long had they been working for you/ the company before they were promoted? What qualifications made them stand out? What resources are available for someone in this role (staff, supplies, anything you feel is important to your job success)? Would you mind sharing with me why the previous person left (such as a hostile work environment)? Once you have the additional information, you can factor this into your ultimate decision and leverage this information in negotiating the best work environment for you. “In business, you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate” – Chester Karrass. Negotiate well and have a fantastic week!
